The fact that less than 3% of women founders secure venture funding is a reminder of the deep-rooted gender inequality in Australia’s startup ecosystem.
Astraeus Labs founder and principal consultant, Beau Ushay is hoping to take action to change that. and hopes to shift the dial on several fronts
Astraeus Labs works with investors, M&A experts and private equity to verify the quality of the tech in target acquisitions, and are making their services available to female founders in an attempt to get more women-led startups to the next stage of growth
Ushay said women need, “less lip service, more action.”
To help early-stage female entrepreneurs build the strongest possible case for funding, they are offering a free ‘Software Performance and Quality Report Health Check’.
What is it?
The Health Check is an independent analysis designed to verify the quality of the tech being built by women heading startups. It involves:
- Astraeus software specialists investigating the tech.
- Verifying the build or providing a roadmap for improvement.
- Providing visibility on offshore or AI coded solution quality.
It is hoped that by female founders accessing experienced software expertise early on, tech can be made more resilient,
resources better allocated and a business case built for the next stage.
It measures performance, maintenance and scalability across five key verticals: Code quality, security, tech stack, IT architecture; and data and databases
The Health Check can then be raised as a third-party endorsement to convince investors the tech is worth investing in.
Changing the story
Ushay says it is time to take action on the startup funding gap.
“On average, women generate 78c of revenue per dollar invested, as opposed to 31c for men according to new UBS data,” he said.
“There are countless stats like this. The fact we’re still seeing this trend is frankly absurd.”
Ushay believes more female founders need to be supported in the “early stages”.
“It will mean more successful women in tech leadership at later stages and the flywheel grows. Supporting women early is better for everyone,” he said.
While stamping out gender inequality from the startup ecosystem is huge, the company wants to part of the change:
“This is us doing something about it,” Ushay said.
