The NSW government is spending $2.8 million in grants to install 549 new kerbside chargers for electric vehicles across 130 suburbs, between Newcastle and Wollongong over the 12 months.

EV Kerbside Charging Grants were awarded to five companies: Charge Post, Connected Kerb, EVX, Plus ES and EF Asset Management, which will contribute a combined $2.2 million to their installation across 22 local government areas.

The biggest winner is the City of Parramatta, with 70 chargers, followed by the Northern Beaches council with 66. Sydney and Newcastle city councils each score 48, with Wollongong scoring 12, and Southern and Lane Cove scoring just 2 each.

The chargers range from 7 kilowatts to 22 kilowatts and include pole mounted and pedestal EV chargers. They will be installed on kerbsides and in public council car parks in the coming year.

Sydney startup EVX, founded in 2021 by Sean McGinty and Kevin Mooney, will supply more than half (278) of the new kerbside chargers across Sydney, after scoring 27% of the total grant funding

The Australian-designed, made and pole-mounted EV chargers were developed by EVX to meet the technological limitations utility providers and local governments face in rolling out EV charging infrastructure sustainably.

CEO Andrew Forster, said EVX chargers use AC power with smart charging capability, have a low impact on the local grid and can be rolled out quickly.

“Convenient access to EV chargers remains a big challenge for EV drivers in some of Sydney’s most well-established and densely populated suburbs, also having the potential to put-off many potential EV owners in these areas for lack of charging infrastructure,,” he said.

“Thanks to our previous and extensive deployments across NSW, we have developed an efficient and rapidly scalable approach to the deployment of kerbside charging infrastructure.”

NSW climate change and energy acting minister for Paul Scully said additional chargers will accelerate the shift to net-zero emissions.

“Expanding our charging network gives drivers the confidence they need to go electric, knowing ample charging options are readily available, even if they don’t have a garage or off-street parking,” he said.
