Online commercial insurance platform Upcover has partnered with legal tech startup Lawpath to make it easier for small businesses and startups to access legal and insurance services.

This new bundled offering, launching this month, will be offered online via both platforms for Australian businesses to buy tailored insurance coverage alongside custom legal documents

Upcover cofounder and COO Anish Sinha said the collaboration comes at a time when the demand for digital-first services is surging, in part because 95% of commercial insurance in Australia is delivered offline.

It’s that gap in the market, which Upcover’, after raising $11 million in a Series A in February this year, set out to address. The API-based embedded SMB insurance platform launched in 2021. Last year it doubled revenue and halved costs. More than  60,000 businesses are using the platform

“This partnership is about breaking down yet another barrier for small businesses, startups and sole traders,” Sinha said.

“We’ve built Upcover to challenge the analogue incumbents and to bring business insurance into the digital age.

“One in three businesses that quote with us take insurance from us, that’s because we’re offering coverage that actually fits their needs. By teaming up with Lawpath, we’re combining two essential services, legal and insurance, into a single, automated experience that reflects how modern businesses operate.”

Lawpath is used by more than 500,000 businesses. Around the same time Upcover raised, the online legal services scaleup, launched in 2014, banked $10 million from Westpac.

Lawpath CEO Dominic Woolrych said the joint offering will initially focus on sole traders and early-stage businesses, offering packages that include public liability, professional indemnity and directors’ insurance alongside key legal documents like shareholder agreements, employment contracts and IP protections.

“Our customers often ask us for help with business insurance, just as many of upcover’s clients need legal documents,” he said.

“This partnership brings two essential services under one roof, simplifying operations for Australia’s entrepreneurs and business owners.”

Together, they plan to expand into other verticals with industry-specific bundles and embedded service offerings.

Upcover and Lawpath’s integration is also supported by their existing technology stacks, enabling one-click purchase paths, automated onboarding and ongoing compliance support powered by AI.
